When you join the Elks, you step into a living tradition of service, friendship, and belonging that spans generations. From supporting veterans to building community programs, and funding the renowned Children’s Eye Clinic in Oregon, the Elks make a difference that lasts.
Membership also means you’re welcome in every Lodge across the nation, where you’ll always find friends, purpose, and opportunities to give back.
One Lodge. One family. One mission.
The story of the Elks began in New York City in 1867, when a small group of actors and entertainers called themselves the “Jolly Corks.” They met on Sundays to enjoy fellowship and fun at a time when city laws kept public establishments closed. Their gatherings were lighthearted, with little formality beyond raising a toast to absent friends.
Everything changed just before Christmas that year. When one of their members passed away suddenly, his wife and children were left with nothing. The group realized that friendship alone was not enough, they needed a greater purpose.
On February 16, 1868, they transformed their circle into a true fraternal order - one with rituals, symbols of strength and majesty, and, most importantly, a mission: to care for one another, to give back to their communities, and to live by the guiding virtues of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity.
What began as a handful of friends became the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, a nationwide movement that has touched millions of lives for more than 150 years.
